The Process of Discovery: Finding Out Why Your Child is Struggling
Reading Rockets looks at how young children learn to read, why so many struggle, and what we can do to help them. The website includes an archive of articles, a free online professional development course on reading, video interviews with top children’s authors, a daily headline service, blogs, bilingual parent tips, and much more. The Reading Rockets project also encompasses programs produced for PBS, including A Tale of Two Schools and the the 10-part Launching Young Readers series. For television, Noel’s work includes the PBS documentary A Tale of Two Schools, narrated by Morgan Freeman, and the five-part public TV series Exploring Your Brain.

Autism is defined by a specific set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” affecting individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today. Students may have problems with rhyming, and pulling words apart into their individual sounds (segmenting) and putting individual sounds together to form words (blending). This makes it difficult to decode words accurately, which can lead to trouble with fluency and comprehension.
To find a testing facility, ask a physician for a referral or contact the special education office of your local school system. If you live near a college or university, you can inquire about whether they have an office that provides support for students with disabilities. They may be able to administer tests there, or recommend a location that can. Many of the adults in your child’s life are unfamiliar with learning disorders in general, or your child’s unique pattern of strengths and limitations.

Facts about learning disabilities
As students move through the grades, more and more of the information they need to learn is presented in written (through textbooks) or oral (through lecture) form. Some individuals, despite having an average or above average level of intelligence, have real difficulty acquiring basic academic skills. These skills include those needed for successful reading, writing, listening, speaking and/or math. Parenting a child with learning disabilities or ADHD is a challenge.
